Majedie unveils teams for ‘Next Generation Investor 2021’ competition

London, 10 December 2020: Majedie Asset Management (“Majedie”), the specialist active equity investor, today revealed the three teams which will be competing to win the title of ‘Next Generation Investor 2021’. The investment competition, now in its second year, is aimed at female university students to encourage them to consider asset management as an attractive career choice.

Each team will be given a notional £25,000 to invest in listed equities and can trade as they wish from 31 January until 30 June 2021. Before they begin and throughout the period, Majedie will provide the competing teams with in-depth training on stock selection, portfolio construction, financial modelling, ESG integration and mentoring by its award-winning fund management team. The notional profits earned during the competition by each team will be matched in real money by Majedie and donated to the respective UK registered charity of their choice. The team with the best investment performance over the period will receive an additional £5,000 donation to be made to their chosen UK registered charity.

Majedie devised this university outreach programme in 2019 to address the industry-wide issue of female under representation by encouraging female university students to view the investment world as an entirely natural career choice. The success of the inaugural competition in 2020, which was won by Ella Rowell and Margaret Powers from the London School of Economics, encouraged Majedie to advertise the 2021 edition in 112 UK universities, up from 68 last year.

Rhiannon Collis, Majedie’s Head of Clients, said:
“The growing interest in our Next Generation Investor competition has proven that there is a real demand among women to learn more about asset management. Given how the pandemic has brought the issues of culture, purpose, diversity and inclusion to the fore, we are committed to play our part to encourage awareness and interest, lowering barriers to raise the industry bar. We wish the best of luck to all three teams in the competition and hope they enjoy what will be an exciting and challenging six months for them.”

The three teams competing in the Majedie ‘Next Generation Investor 2021’ competition are as follows:

The competition will run from 1 January to 30 June 2021 and the winning team will be announced shortly thereafter.

This initiative forms part of Majedie’s broader diversity and inclusion efforts, which include supporting the  Diversity Project Charity, a grant giving organisation supporting charities with social mobility, diversity and inclusivity aims, and Investment20/20, which works to promote the investment management industry to diverse talent across the UK.
